Water
Make sure the water main is shut off when there is a severe leak. Your contractor can show you where this is located.
Electricity
Locate the main electric switch immediately following electrical emergencies – it might be a pull handle or large circuit breaker in the fuse box. Shut the electricity off if:
- A burning smell appears following a complete blackout
- Surrounding pieces of switches or plugs turn black or get hot
- Burning occurs in large devices that usually work properly
- The distinct smell of burning insulation is detected
Natural Gas
Gas leaks cause explosions and fires when they go undetected – but only turn it off if you are absolutely sure. Turn the lever a quarter turn using a crescent wrench until the lever crosses the direction of the pipe across the flow, then ventilate your home by opening windows and doors.
