Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning time is safety check up time.

As you go about spring cleaning, take a few moments to check out the following:

  • Leaking or bursting washing machine hoses are a leading cause of household damage. Check the hoses & water supply valves for signs of moisture, corrosion, swelling or aging. If the hoses are over 3 years old, replace them for safety.
  • While you’re looking behind the washer, check behind your dryer. Excess lint behind your dryer could mean you have a loose or damaged vent hose. This affects the humidity and cleanliness in your home, costs you extra money for air conditioning and gas fired dryers can spew deadly carbon monoxide into your home.
  • Now is a good time to check your smoke detector. Change the battery if you can’t remember when it was last checked. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to test the detector. If you’re re-painting the area, make sure you don’t paint over the smoke detector.
  • As you get your cleaning supplies from underneath the kitchen sink, look closely for signs of moisture or mold. Some leaks only occur when using the sink or dishwasher and though they don’t cause a flood, they can cause damage.
  • Freshen and clean your disposer by grinding up a cup of ice cubes. Drop in the ice cubes, add 1/4 cup of vinegar and let it grind without running water. Once the ice is chopped up, run cold water to clear the disposer then turn off the disposer.
  • Check your water heater. It's important to have your water heater professionally checked but you can make sure that the area around the water heater is clear of dust, lint, brooms and any other flammables. Check the piping connections for signs of corrosion or moisture.
  • Check your toilet tank by dropping a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Don’t flush the toilet for at least 30 minutes. After that time, check the bowl to see if any colored water has migrated from the tank to the bowl. Also check around the base and water supply for signs of moisture and corrosion.
