Some Info. About University Park, TX: Located between Dallas
and Highland Park is the city of University
Park, receiving its name from the location near SMU, Southern Methodist
University which officially began in 1915. The employees of the university
built their residences around the school. These homes adjacent to the university
used the water and sewer lines of the university which were supplied from
Dallas. As the population grew, the school was no longer able to maintain
the demand for its water system. Neither neighbor of University Park wanted
the monetary responsibility of having to revamp their water and sewer system,
so being annexed was not an option. University Park became its own city in
1924 and by 1925 had its own garbage disposal system. As the population of
SMU grew, so did that of University Park. By 1990, University Park had an
estimated population of 22,259. Growth has slowed since the early 1950’s
as all the land surrounding University Park has been annexed by Dallas, and
therefore there is little room for growth.
